When is a Release Manager a Release Manager?

Hello

I'm after a bit of guidance from this wonderful community.

Part of my role in my company is to own the Release Management process. I am therefore call the Release Manager. We also have people co-ordinating the delivery of each Release, who are know as Release Managers.

I understand the difference between the two roles but it is causing a lot of confusion, when people need to talk to the Release Manager because they don't know who to talk to.

I was wondering what other people call this roles and which of the two roles needs to change their title.

Thanks in advance.

Mick

Change their names to Deployment managers because that is what they are.

Why is the operational role not simply called "release co-ordinator" or "[technical] release implementer" or similar?

If these co-ordinators are full time roles, then presumably the job title is to do with status, in which case you really want to be called the "release director" or some such thing.

If your HR is so slapdash as to have allowed this ambiguity to happen, you might get away with "release god" or at least "release supremo".

"head of release management"
"deputy IS director (release management)"
"senior service manager (release processes)"
"CiC - release management"
"change management assistant - release"

Some of these may better than others (I leave you to judge that), but your company culture should tell you which way to go.

I trust your company is not one of those that describes duties and responsibilities in terms of "performs the role of release management; carries out release management activities" like some job adverts I have seen.

Hi,

"Change their names to Deployment managers" will require more of a mindset shift than changing your name to to Release Management Process Owner -- just another way to go about it.

John,

don't bring your incidents (possibly indicating problems) here. There's a separate section for that.

I've always wanted a more user friendly interface that would say "I'm just being slow. I'm not broken. Honest guv."
